Patent Litigation Associate

Position Overview/Responsibilities

Groombridge, Wu, Baughman & Stone’s LLP’s New York or DC office seeks a 2nd to 5th year patent litigation associate. Law firm experience and a technical or science degree are preferred as well as an interest in cases relating to technology or life sciences. The ideal candidate has outstanding academic credentials, patent litigation experience, a strong work ethic, and superior written and oral communication skills.

Qualifications

The candidate must have a juris doctorate degree from an accredited law school and be admitted to and in good standing with the relevant jurisdiction’s bar. The candidate must also possess litigation experience focused on technology or life science patents and be a self-starter with an interest in working with technology or life science companies.

Location

On-site at the firm’s New York City or Washington, DC location (with the option of remote work up to two days a week).

Salary

This is an exempt position with a salary range of $250,000-$385,000. This represents the Firm’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications and location. Associates are eligible for a discretionary year-end bonus based on performance and eligible to participate in the 401(k) component of the firm’s Retirement Savings Plans. Associates are also eligible for medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and paid time-off benefits.

Technical Advisor

Position Overview

Groombridge Wu’s Washington, DC office is seeking an experienced technical advisor to support the firm’s IP litigation and PTAB practice. Technical advisors are registered patent agents who work with the attorneys on all stages of a matter, from commencement of a case through trial, to provide legal services to clients using their advance knowledge of scientific and technical fields. The ideal candidate for this position has a strong work ethic, is an enthusiastic self-starter who has excellent problem-solving and multitasking skills under time constraints, has an exceptional command of the science, is able to communicate to lawyers and non-lawyers, is comfortable working in a dynamic, deadline-driven workplace, and able to develop strong working relationships with senior partners and clients.  Technical Advisors use their backgrounds and problem-solving skills to understand our clients’ innovations and their patent matters.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities may vary depending upon the project to which they are assigned, but include assisting attorneys in the representation of clients involved in contested patent proceedings. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Use their science and technology background to facilitate the flow of information between inventors, experts, attorneys, and clients.
  • Advise attorneys in developing technical arguments and presenting scientific and technical data to those without scientific backgrounds.
  • Participate in all aspects of the investigation of each case that they are assigned to.
  • Work with attorneys with witness preparation and may attend depositions, hearings, and arguments to offer guidance and clarity on technical matters.
  • Collaborate with attorneys in developing arguments and preparing petitions, responses or other materials for proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“PTAB”) and district court litigations. This could include preparing patentability analyses, including prior art assessments, and infringement and validity contentions. It may also include working with expert witnesses and developing declarations for use in infringement and validity disputes.
  • Develop and provide guidance in presenting technical arguments and preparing demonstrative exhibits. 
  • Assist attorneys in reviewing, understanding, and relying on scientific or specialized documents.  
  • Understand our clients’ technological businesses.
  • Learn intellectual property law.

Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in an engineering discipline (EE, ME, CE, biological engineering, etc.), computer science, physics, biology or chemistry. Interdisciplinary experience with a high-tech field and biotech/life sciences field is preferred.  
  • Admission to the Patent Bar.
  • A minimum of two years of prosecution (or PTAB) experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze specialized data and documents from the perspective of his or her field of study.
  • A self-starter with a curiosity and an interest in intellectual property.
  • A strong drive and willingness to own projects and see them to completion.

  • On-site at the firm’s Washington, DC location (with the option of remote work up to two days a week).

FLSA Classification

  • Exempt

The salary range is $140,000-$165,000 and represents the Firm’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Legal Administrative Assistant

Position Overview

Groombridge Wu’s New York office is seeking a Legal Administrative Assistant to support the attorneys of our firm. The ideal candidate for this position has a strong work ethic, is an enthusiastic self-starter who has excellent problem-solving and multitasking skills under time constraints, attention to detail, and is comfortable working in a dynamic, deadline-driven workplace.  Candidates must be able to think proactively and creatively and interact with all levels of professionals inside and outside the firm. Previous experience as an assistant to patent litigators is a plus. The position requires excellent judgment and communication, organizational and computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Manage attorneys’ schedule and appointments, and enter important departmental and committee meetings as appropriate for the attorneys
  • Answer, screen and place telephone calls as required by attorneys and deliver messages promptly
  • Monitor emails and respond promptly as necessary
  • Open and sort mail and ensure all outgoing mail has proper labels and mailing forms attached
  • Set up and/or coordinate conference calls as instructed using conference call service, Zoom or Teams
  • Set up conference rooms for client meetings with appropriate equipment, food and beverages as necessary
  • Make travel arrangements (air, restaurant, hotel, etc.) as instructed and ensure all travel information is listed on the attorneys’ calendars
  • Prepare and enter expense reports electronically
  • Create/release time entry for attorneys
  • Assist attorneys in submitting conflict check requests
  • Prepare and proofread documents, including engagement letters
  • Collaborate with other team members to complete projects and meet deadlines
  • Create and revise correspondence and legal documents using MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Save/file documents in document management system
  • Blackline documents; and convert documents to pdf format
  • Assist attorneys with preparation and regular updates of exhibits, binders, indexes, etc., in connection with trials, and depositions, if applicable

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of experience as a legal assistant or, in the alternative, a bachelor’s degree and three years of experience as a legal assistant, preferably at a large law firm or patent litigation firm
  • Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Adobe, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent writing, time-management, recordkeeping, and communication skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, projects, competing priorities, and tight deadlines simultaneously while maintaining quality
  • Knowledge of legal documents and procedures is preferred
  • Experience with legal document management and reimbursement software is a plus

Location and Hours

  • On-site at the firm’s Manhattan location (with the option of remote work up to two days a week)
  • Monday-Friday 9am-5pm with the expectation of overtime availability as needed

The salary range for this role is $75,000 – $95,000 and represents the Firm’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent upon a number of factors, including but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications and location.
